Test your knowledge on water testing
Cover the bottom part of this page while you answer the True or False questions at the top. Then uncover to check your answers!

True or False?
1. Age of test solution has the greatest effect on accuracy.
2. Reagents should be stored at a temperature range of 36 degrees - 85 degrees F.

3. If you perform a water hardness test and get a blue color change instead of a purple color change, this indicates chlorine in the sample.
4. Static electricity can alter the drop size coming out of the dropper bottle, which can effect test results.
5. Sunlight is best for reading test results.
6. High levels of chlorine in a sample can cause a pH test to turn green instead of red.
7. Hot water samples, such as from a spa, should be brought to room temperature before testing.
8. It is OK to use test solutions that have been frozen.
9. When mixing a test, do not use your finger to cap the vial.

Check Your Answers
1. False. Storage conditions (such as sunlight or freezing) are the single most important factor in shelf life; however, test solutions should generally be replaced once a year.
2. True. Also make sure that all bottles are tightly capped, stored in the case out of direct sunlight and away from other chemicals.
3. False. The blue color usually indicates the presence of metals from algaecides or equipment. Take your water to a testing center and ask to have it checked for metals.
4. True. Use a clean cloth to periodically wipe off the tip to eliminate static electricity. Also make sure you hold the bottle vertically to ensure uniform drop size.
5. True. Natural, northern light is the best source for reading test results.
6. False. High levels of chlorine can cause a blue/purple color. To avoid this, add a drop of chlorine neutralizer to the sample before testing.
7. False. The water can be tested immediately. Waiting can compromise the accuracy of the test.
8. True. Allow the bottle to thaw at room temperature. However, if the bottle is cracked, if there are particles floating in the solution, or if there is a crusty buildup around the tip, replace the solution.
9. True. Body oil, soap, perspiration, and other substances on your hands can contaminate the test.
10. False. Different manufacturers make their solutions in different concentrations. Interchanaina reaaents can aive false results.
