The
Pool Professor Spotlights a "Wheeling Elvi*"
Paul Moseley, a Photo Journalist
with the "Arlington Star Telegram" for the past 20 years, wowed
us with his Grand Prize Winning
Photo Contest entry of his group, "The Wheeling Elvi", in
and around his pool after a Fourth of July parade. We had to find out
more about this talented guy with the fun hobby!
Q: How did you get into
photography?
A: I worked on the paper in high school, and I had an after-school
job at the locat Safeway. One day a car crashed through the front wall
of the store. The manager, knowing that I had a camera, asked me to take
some pictures of it. I sent them off to the Associated Press, and the
next day, there was my picture in the "Dallas Times-Herald"!
From then on, I worked free-lance for the AP.
Q: What is your favorite
of all the pictures you have taken?
A: Although I have a lot of sports pictures and really enjoy some
of the ones I have taken of the Dallas Cowboys, my favorite is a portrait
of George Foreman, with him holding a Bible, in front of the American
Flag. I had spent a few days at a training camp of his, and was trying
to work up the nerve to ask him for an autograph. On the last day, he
called me over, said he knew I wanted an autograph, and handed me a note
he had written. I have the note framed with the portrait. The pictures
that mean the most to me have a story behind them.
Q: How did you get
into the Wheeling Elvi?
A: I have a group of friends that met through bicycle racing, and
we all have a passion for the Honda mini-bikes that were popular in the
late '60s and early '70s. A couple of guys got the idea to dress as Elvis
when they rode in a Fourth of July parade one year. Those two became four,
and the group has just grown from there! One year when we were in the
Ft. Worth Parade of Lights, we were recruited by a parade talent scout
to be in the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas. We've been in the Austin Mardi
Gras Parade, Ft. Worth's Retrofest, and many neighborhood parades around
the area. My wife even got me my own Elvis costume for Christmas 2 years
ago.
Q: So your wife supports
you in this madcap venture?
A: She and some of the other wives have gotten together to form
the "Chicklettes". They have costumes, and we got them some
bikes to ride, too. They make great Priscillas!
Q: Is your house
full of Elvis memorabilia?
A: You won't find much Elvis around the house until you go into
the guest bathroom, other- wise known as "The King's Throne Room".
It is covered in Elvis artifacts, floor to ceiling. We also have a big
album of pictures from our adventures with the Wheeling Elvi.
Q: It was actually
your wife, Pixie, that took the Grand Prize winning photo of you and the
other Elvi. Did photography bring you two together?
A: No, she's a "gear head". It was a mutual love of sports
cars that brought us together at Texas Tech while we were both in college.
We have acquired quite a collection of mecha- nized "toys" through
the years!
Paul Moseley and his wife Pixie have been a part of the Pulliam family
since the Spring of 2000. They have 2 daughters, and 2 cats, one of which
is called "67", because of 6 toes on one foot and 7 toes on
another.
*Elvi -the plural
of Elvis
