Special Treatment Knowing the value of people pleasing programs, Pulliam goes the extra mile for employees, too. "We try to recognize people in many different ways," says Lizz Pulliam. For example, last year there were Queens for a Day, honoring the women in Accounting; Super Superintendents Day; the Shining Knights of Service Day; the Salesperson Recognition Dinner; and bonuses for the schedulers. That's in addition to employee theme parties, picnics and the like. "It sounds like we don't do any work, but we really do!" Lizz Pulliam exclaims. "We just like to have fun. You should enjoy what you do and where you work." Employees definitely enjoy the bonuses they earn. "If people are saying fabulous things [in our customer surveys], we'll give [staff] bonuses of cash or gift certificates based on it," she says. |

Unique pools Although people are clearly paramount at Pulliam, another top priority is pool and spa construction. "We're always trying new and different things because people want customized pools," says Lizz Pulliam. The builder doesn't have a trademark pool style that automatically says "Pulliam" to the viewer, but its rockwork is distinctive, say the Pulliams. Rockwork notwithstanding, the firm also tackles challenging pool construction with gusto. "We have several elevation changes in this area," Barry Pulliam notes. "The most striking pools are on a hillside, and we've done several. The challenge is to conform [to] the landscape - not mow down trees or disturb the natural beauty."

Future Plans
Having met its goals for a retail store and more pool
construction this year, the ambitious company has big plans
for 2002. Pulliam hopes to construct 700 pools, up from
about 560; add a human resources department; produce
a new employee handbook and a CD sales presentation
in conjunction with Aquatech;and fine-tune programs
such as Pool Buddy and the Preferred Customer Club.
